![]() ![]() ![]() It was also interesting to see how someone whom Sadie considered an enemy could change and become her friend. ![]() She still has her worries over her mothers health, she also wonders how much longer her father's job will last in Michigan. Her feelings for Andrew are starting to change, but hoping for more could ruin their friendship. I have enjoyed seeing Sadie's character grow and change with this book. Will this put the bears in danger? Who is the girl and her family and why are they living in the woods? When they decide to follow her they realize that she and her family are living in a run down shack close to the bears den. After dinner they decide to take a hike to check on the bear den and see a disheveled girl in the woods very close to the bear den. This story starts out with Sadie her family and her friend Ruth attending Thanksgiving dinner at the research cabin with Helen and her son Andrew. After reading the first book in this series titled "Shades of Truth" I was excited to continue the series and I must say this book didn't disappoint. ![]()

Nin was under the analysis of Otto Rank during the period of writing House of Incest. Toward the end of the book, the character called "the modern Christ" puts Nin's use of the word into context: “If only we could all escape from this house of incest, where we only love ourselves in the other." ![]() But eventually it becomes a sterile nightmare. At first, such a self-love can seem ideal because it is without fear and without risk. One is then only loving oneself, shunning all differences. In other words, in this book the word "incest" describes a selfish love where one can appreciate in another only that which is similar to oneself. Nin's usage of the word incest in this case is metaphorical, not literal. Rather, House of Incest is a surrealistic look within the narrator's subconscious mind as she attempts to escape from a dream in which she is trapped, or in Nin's words, as she attempts to escape from "the woman's season in hell." But unlike her diaries and erotica, House of Incest does not detail the author's relationships with famous lovers like Henry Miller, nor does it contain graphic depiction of sex. ![]() ![]() Originally published in 1936, it is Anaïs Nin's first work of fiction.
